ok so i just found out there is an abandoned girl scout camp up in lee canyon. camp foxtail. how did i live here this long and not know about this

went down a whole rabbit hole so here is your history lesson. the girl scouts ran it as a summer camp from 1948 all the way to fall 2017. almost 70 years of southern nevada girls going up the mountain every summer. thousands of them

the name comes from the bristlecone pines. the needles are short and bunched together so the branches look like a foxs tail. how cool is that. the girl scouts go way back out here too, first troops started in boulder city in 1932

as for why it closed, they were told it sat on protected land for the mt charleston blue butterfly, which is endangered, and that came with strict forest service rules. the buildings needed around 1.5 million in renovations, some of it for safety. sounds like a really tough call for them

then right around the closing ceremony the center for biological diversity said the camp was never in the protected area and that butterfly hasnt been detected there since the 60s. havent seen a response to that yet

anyways went up yesterday on a wim. did not plan anything. did not charge my phone. it died before i even got up the canyon so i have zero photos

so heres a satellite pic instead lol

foxtail from above. lodge, cabins, water tanknot my pic obviously

big lodge down at the bottom, a few cabins, a water tank off by itself on the left. all just sitting there in the pines. almost 70 years of summers, pretty wild to think about

will get real photos next time. gonna charge my phone first. big if

might go look for more abandoned places. they are definitely out there
